What is an Open Surgery?

During an open surgery, the surgeon makes an incision and opens skin and muscles, to insert a retractor and then the instruments. The incision also allows the surgeon to follow the entire procedure through the incision.

Today, only a minority of procedures are performed with open surgery, whereas more procedures make use of keyhole surgery, also called “minimally invasive” surgery or Laparoscopy.
