What is Fatty Liver?

Fatty liver disease or steatosis is the buildup of excess fat in the liver. It is known in medicine as Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD). It’s the most common cause of liver disease in Western countries. The condition is usually associated with obesity and insulin resistance. The disease can progress into advanced fibrosis and cirrhosis. This evolution brings all the complications of cirrhosis.

Fatty Liver: Causes & Symptoms

The most common cause is obesity. Other causes may be: diabetes and incorrect diet and rarer metabolic diseases. Most people with fatty liver are unaware they have a liver disease. They typically learn about it when they have medical examinations for other reasons.

Reversal

In general you should:
– lose weight safely (consult an expert)
– avoid drinking alcohol
– control your diabetes if you have it
– eat a healthy diet: eat less carbs and sugars, eat more vegetables, proteins and the right fat
– increase your physical activity
– get regular check-ups from your specialist

Diagnose

An ultrasound of the liver can suggest the presence of a fatty liver. Other diagnosis methods may be a CT scan or an MRI.

Children and Fatty Liver

Fatty liver disease is the most common cause of liver disease in children. Lack of exercise, in combination with fast food and soda drinks, makes children increasingly prone to the disease.
